NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? It was a hard year in the bluegrass world and the loss of icons such as Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson hung over the International Bluegrass Music Awards on Thursday night.
The Gibson Brothers won entertainer of the year and joined Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice as the only multiple winners at the ceremony at Ryman Auditorium. But the attention of most was turned toward the pioneers no longer able to attend.
An emotional Steve Martin paid tribute to the late banjo innovator Scruggs with a special 30-banjo salute that included many of the world's top five-string players.
The IBMAs also saluted Watson and players Doug Dillard and Everett Lilly, as well as bluegrass promoter and actor Andy Griffith, all of whom died in the last year. Watson won guitarist of the year posthumously.
It was the first entertainer win for The Gibson Brothers, who also took home honors for gospel recorded performance for "Singing As We Rise," with Ricky Skaggs. Sisk & Ramblers Choice won album of the year for "The Heart of a Song" and song of the year for "A Far Cry From Lester & Earl," keeping with the night's unofficial theme.
In major categories, top nominee Russell Moore won male vocalist of the year, Dale Ann Bradley won female vocalist, Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers were named emerging artist, Blue Highway won vocal group, The Boxcars won instrumental group, Lonesome River Band won instrumental recorded performance for "Angeline The Baker" and St. Jude charity album "Life Goes On" won recorded event.
Rob Ickes (dobro), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Sammy Shelor (banjo), Adam Steffey (mandolin) and Marshall Wilborn (bass) won instrumentalist of the year awards.

Though the night was full of spirited performances, none could hold up to Martin's show-ending salute to Scruggs. The actor, comedian and musician seemed on the verge of tears as he paid tribute to Scruggs before inviting players including J.D. Crowe, Kristin Scott Benson, Sam Bush, show co-host Del McCoury, Lawson, Shelor and Tony Trischka and more than 20 others onto the stage where Scruggs first played his rolling, rollicking style during the Grand Ole Opry.
Scruggs' sons Gary and Randy also were part of the tribute.
Martin said in an interview before the show that he was inspired by the Kennedy Center Honors when conceiving of the Scruggs tribute.
"They like to do these big salutes and I thought why not here at the IBMAs for Earl," Martin said. "All the banjo players who've been influenced by him, why can't they all be here and pay tribute to him?"
McCoury, inducted into the Hall of Fame last year, said he would probably not have gotten into music had it not been for the Flatt & Scruggs record his brother bought in 1950. The 11-year-old McCoury was transfixed by Scruggs' playing.
"I just could not get that sound out of my head," McCoury said.
Mandolin player Bush joked he was playing rhythm banjo while on stage, but said he felt privileged to be involved.
"I knew Mr. Earl," Bush said. "It gets real emotional as I look at Randy and Gary standing there and how they must feel, and how everybody loved their dad. He was a true gentleman. Nobody's more deserving of accolades than him."

Nineteen people have died in a plane crash in Nepal. They were on their way to climb Mount Everest. The plane crashed into a field shortly after take-off from the capital Kathmandu. It was bound for Lukla, the starting point for a trek through the Himalayan mountains to the base camp of Mount Everest. ITV's Paul Davies reports.

KATMANDU, Nepal -- A plane carrying trekkers to the Everest region crashed and caught fire just after takeoff Friday in Nepal's capital, killing 19 people.
The victims included British, Chinese and Nepali passengers, authorities said.
The pilot of the domestic Sita Air flight reported trouble two minutes after takeoff, and Katmandu airport official Ratish Chandra Suman said the pilot appeared to have been trying to turn back.?
The crash site is only 547 yards from the airport, and the wrecked plane was pointing toward the airport area.
Reuters said it was a twin-engine, propeller-driven Dornier aircraft.
Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the crash and identify the bodies. Suman said he could not confirm if the plane was already on fire before it crashed.
Villagers forced back by flames
Cellphone video shot by locals showed the front section of the plane was on fire when it first hit the ground and it appeared the pilot had attempted to land the plane on open ground beside a river.
The fire quickly spread to the rear, but the tail was still in one piece at the scene near the Manohara River on the southwest edge of Katmandu.

Villagers were unable to approach the plane because of the fire and it took some time for firefighters to reach the area and bring the fire under control.

Seven passengers were British and five were Chinese; the other four passengers and the three crew members were from Nepal, authorities said.
Large numbers of local people and security forces gathered at the crash site. The charred bodies were taken by vans to the hospital morgue.
Gateway to Everest
The weather in Katmandu and surrounding areas was clear on Friday morning, and it was one of the first flights to take off from Katmandu's Tribhuwan International Airport. Other flights reported no problems, and the airport operated normally.
The plane was heading for Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest. Thousands of Westerners make treks in the region around the world's highest peak each year. Autumn is considered the best time to trek the foothills of the Himalayan peaks.

You want to be engaged by something?anything?when a thought, so familiar from childhood, comes to mind: "I'm bored!"
Although boredom is often seen as a trivial and temporary discomfort that can be alleviated by a simple change in circumstances, it can also be a chronic and pervasive stressor that can have significant consequences for health and well-being.
Boredom at work may cause serious accidents when safety depends on continuous vigilance, as in medical monitoring or long-haul truck driving. On a behavioral level, boredom has been linked with problems with impulse control, leading to overeating and binge eating, drug and alcohol abuse, and problem gambling. Boredom has even been associated with mortality, lending grim weight to the popular phrase "bored to death."
Although it's clear that boredom can be a serious problem, the scientific study of boredom remains an obscure niche of research, and boredom itself is still poorly understood. Even though it's a common experience, boredom hasn't been clearly defined within the scientific community.
Psychological scientist John Eastwood of York University (Ontario, Canada) and colleagues at the University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo wanted to understand the mental processes that underlie our feelings of boredom in order to create a precise definition of boredom that can be applied across a variety of theoretical frameworks. Their new article, which brings together existing research on attention and boredom, is published in the September 2012 issue of Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.
Drawing from research across many areas of psychological science and neuroscience, Eastwood and colleagues define boredom as "an aversive state of wanting, but being unable, to engage in satisfying activity," which arises from failures in one of the brain's attention networks.
Specifically, we're bored when:
The researchers are confident that integrating the disparate fields of cognitive neuroscience, social psychology, and clinical psychology will produce a more thorough understanding of boredom and attention?phenomena which are ubiquitous and intimately linked.
Armed with a precise and broadly applicable definition of boredom that gets at the underlying mental processes, the authors identify important next steps in research on boredom. Eastwood and his colleagues hope to help in the discovery and development of new strategies that ease the problems of boredom sufferers and address the potential dangers of cognitive errors that are often associated with boredom.

Over the next few months, NASA will map out a strategy for returning bits of Martian rock and soil to Earth, so scientists can study them for signs of past Red Planet life.
That ambitious goal should drive the space agency's next steps at Mars, according to a report released Tuesday (Sept. 25) by the Mars Program Planning Group. The report also lays out several ways Mars sample-return can be accomplished over the next decade or two, and NASA is reviewing those options now.
The agency may reveal its chosen path in February, after the White House releases its federal budget request for fiscal year 2014, NASA officials said Tuesday. In the meantime, here's a brief rundown of the scenarios they're looking at.
Multiple launches
All the major options proposed by the Mars planning group share three basic components in common: a sampling rover, a Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) for blasting the collected rock and soil off the Red Planet surface and a return orbiter, which will snag the samples in space and ferry them to Earth's neighborhood.
In one scenario, these three pieces are all launched separately, with a small "fetch" rover riding along with the MAV. As its name suggests, the fetch rover will carry Red Planet dirt from the sampling rover back to the MAV. [7 Biggest Mysteries of Mars]
This strategy has the advantage of spreading costs and technical challenges across three missions ? which could each be at least two years apart, since Mars launch windows come about every 26 months ? according to the planning group report.
Another option is to consolidate into two launches. The sampling rover would ride alone, while another liftoff would carry the MAV, fetch rover and return orbiter.
In this case, the orbiter would likely have to be powered by solar electic propulsion (SEP), to cut down on weight. The amount of liquid propellant needed for a traditionally powered spacecraft would be quite heavy.
A single launch
Alternatively, all the pieces needed for Mars sample-return could be lofted in a single shot, the report says.
In this case, the sampling rover would carry an integrated MAV with it, eliminating the need for a fetch rover. Again, the return orbiter would be an SEP craft, which creates thrust by accelerating electrically charged atoms or molecules.
The single-launch option would eliminate some mission complexities, such as coordinating the meetup of samples with the MAV. And it would reduce the project's overall cost by cutting out a launch or two. But this scenario has the highest peak-year costs, the report states.
"They all have their pluses and minuses," Orlando Figueroa, team leader of the Mars Program Planning Group, said of the 1-, 2- and 3-launch options.
"It gives you multiple ways to look at this problem, consistent with budget concerns, consistent with opportunities for collaboration, more technology, et cetera," Figueroa told reporters Tuesday. "And that's what we tried to do ? bring all of those options forth to NASA for consideration."
Multiple rovers?
The above options assume that NASA will pick suitable sampling sites using existing data. But the MPPG report also outlines a path that allows for more on-the-ground research, which some scientists may feel is warranted for such an ambitious and expensive project.
"Preservation of biological signatures is rare on Earth, and investigations at multiple sites on Mars dramatically improves the probability of identifying biologically relevant samples," the report states. [5 Bold Claims of Alien Life]
If NASA chooses this course, multiple rovers would be sent to investigate several different sites. Based on the rovers' findings, scientists would eventually select one site for sample return. Mars material would be delivered to Earth via an MAV and return orbiter, as discussed above.
Multiple rovers would incur greater costs, but building identical robots off a production line could help keep the price tag down, the report says.
The human touch
In 2010, President Barack Obama charged NASA with getting astronauts to the vicinity of Mars by the mid-2030s.
The space agency thinks this goal dovetails nicely with its sample-return ambitions, and it sees plenty of room for collaboration between its robotic and human exploration programs in this arena.
For example, astronauts aboard NASA's Orion capsule ? which is still under development ? might be dispatched to intercept the return orbiter in deep space and bring the Mars samples down to Earth, officials said Tuesday.
This approach would eliminate the need to harden the sample capsule for Earth entry, since it would land aboard Orion. And an astronaut inspection would also help ensure the Mars sample is adequately contained, officials said.
"It is taking advantage of the human architecture, because we anticipate it will be there," said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA?s Science Mission Directorate.
"And it potentially solves an issue of, when we return samples, somewhere we have to make sure that the samples are completely contained so there's no chance ? remote as it may be ? that there is something on Mars that could contaminate Earth," he added.
NASA is hoping to launch its first piece of the Mars sample-return architecture in 2018 or 2020, Grunsfeld said. The agency has just $800 million or so to work with until then ? too little for a rover, so NASA will likely launch an orbiter if it chooses the 2018 opportunity, Figueroa said.
But just when pristine little pieces of the Red Planet could make their way to Earth ? and into scientists' labs ? remains very much up in the air.
"As far as time frame ? that's all forward work, to figure out," Grunsfeld said.

LONDON (AP) ? Chelsea captain John Terry has been banned for four matches for racially abusing an opponent.
The former England captain also was fined $356,000 by The English Football Association for abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League game in October 2011.
Both sanctions are on hold pending appeal. Terry was punished by the FA despite being cleared by a criminal court in July of a racially aggravated public order offense.
Before his FA hearing Monday, Terry announced his retirement from international soccer.
He is the second Premier League player in a year to be banned for racism. Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was cited for abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

(Alex Wong/Getty Images)SPRINGFIELD, Va.?For the third straight day, Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama campaigned in the same state, with Romney arguing before an audience of military veterans that potential cuts to the defense budget are "unthinkable and devastating."
Speaking in the battleground state at an American Legion post outside Washington, D.C., Romney blamed Obama for planned defense cuts agreed to under a 2011 vote to raise the debt ceiling, known as sequestration, calling it a "kind of a gun-to-your-head opportunity" that will kill jobs in Virginia.
"They would make devastating cuts to our military. It's a strange proposal in the first place, even stranger that it's being put in place," Romney said. "The impact will be immediate, and significant right here in Virginia: 136,000 jobs will be lost in Virginia as a result of this move."
The White House has pointed out that Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, and other Republican congressional leaders supported sequestration when it was proposed. Romney has previously said it was a "mistake" for Republicans in Congress to back the deal.
But speaking in Virginia, Romney put the blame squarely on Obama?arguing the president is cutting the military at a time of turmoil around the world.
"It is still a troubled and dangerous world. And the idea of cutting our military commitment by a trillion dollars over this decade is unthinkable and devastating," Romney declared. "And when I become president of the United States, we will stop it. I will not cut our commitment to the military."
Romney spoke at approximately the same time Obama held his own campaign event in Virginia Beach. A recent Fox News poll found Obama leading Romney by 7 points among likely Virginia voters, 50 to 43 percent.

Well, it took a few years, but UFC president Dana White (Pictured) has finally decided to badmouth Bellator Fighting Championships, his biggest stateside rival.
While most competitors enter his crosshairs rather quickly, Bellator has managed to fly under White?s radar since hitting the mixed martial arts scene in 2008. However, it appears the fine print in Bellator?s fighter contracts has forced White to unload.
?I don?t talk much about Bellator, but what they do is one of the dirtiest things you can do in the business,? White stated following UFC 152?s post-fight press conference. ?It?s dirty, it?s grimy, and it?s just despicable. I have the right to match (contracts), but once I cut a guy and let him go and somebody else tries to sign him, I don?t come back and say, ?Oh, you?re breaking the contract. I have matching rights.?
?When you made the decision to cut him, you cut him.?
The two athletes that were most recently affected with Bellator?s business practices were Tyson Nam and Roger Hollett, who lost this weekend to Matt Hamill at UFC 152.
Bellator had signed Hollett to a contract, but they didn?t use the light heavyweight and decided to release him. However, when the UFC showed interest in Hollett, Bellator enforced a matching rights period which left Hollett hanging high and dry for a short period. Bellator ultimately decided not to match and allowed Hollett to walk.
In regards to Nam, Bellator had pretty much left him for dead until he knocked out Bellator bantamweight champ Eduardo Dantas last month at??Shooto Brazil 33.? All of a sudden, guess who can?t sign with another promotion?
?That?s one of the dirtiest things you can do in the fight business,? White added. ?[Nam] is not going to make or break the UFC, but the problem is the dirty scumbag moves that these guys are pulling hurts the fighters. It?s one of the dirtiest, low-down despicable things you can do in the fight business.
?I have no beef with those guys. They?re doing their own thing and I could care less, but that?s dirty. It?s borderline criminal.?

We all know instinctively that any accounting practice would generate more revenue if the staff had both the skill and motivation to proactively look for business opportunities.
Unfortunately, most attempts to engage them in the process meet with failure.? There are lots of reasons for this.? Sometimes it is because they can?t relate to what?s required, or it?s because this isn?t what they signed up for, or it is too far removed from what their everyday duties are, or they can?t see what?s in it for them, or it represents change, and we all know how difficult this can be for many people.
It goes without saying that if a given staff person clearly expresses their preference NOT to be involved, there is no upside in forcing them to do so.
With thanks to Jan in Chicago ? and Bill in Miami who has also had success ? here?s a technique that has been proven to work, especially in the October ? November time frame ?
First, you cull through your client list and isolate business/organizational clients.? From those you select, a) those you don?t frequently talk with and, b) those your staff regularly talks with.? These two lists may have considerable overlap.
Create a three column list that contains the client name, the name of the appropriate contact person and the preferred telephone number to reach them.
Then poll your staff and find those who would be willing to phone a client and say, in effect, the following (use your own words):
?Mr. Maclin?? Hi, this is Beth over at Snow, Slush and Sleet and Barbara [the name of the partner Mr. Maclin knows and typically deals with] has asked me to give you a call.? The reason is that we want to look ahead and ensure we do everything we can to minimize your taxes in 2013.? I?d like to ask you a few questions that should tell us if we should take a closer look.? Is that OK?? [she says yes]
Are you planning any significant capital expenditures in 2013?
Are you potentially acquiring another business or adding a major product line or activity?
Are you thinking of selling the business or otherwise downsizing?
Are you planning to aggressively grow or expand in 2013??
If Mr. Maclin answers in the affirmative to any of these, Beth would continue ?
?Can you give me an idea of (e.g.) the business you may acquire ? revenue or size?? [he does and Beth makes some notes]? Mr. Maclin, I appreciate your time.? I?m going to give this information to Jeremy and he?ll quickly review your file with it in mind.? If he feels you two should talk further, he or I will contact you a day and time can be set up.? If not, I?ll phone you back and tell you everything looks OK.?
Why is this a good process?? First of all, from the client?s perspective, it is a demonstration of your interest in their welfare and is additionally a high quality communication or ?touch? between your firm and the client.
From the staff person?s perspective, it is easy to explain to them that this process provides a very real potential benefit to the client.? They are helping, not ?selling.??? Further, it is easy to reward staff for their participation.? For example, if they obtain positive responses to at least one of the questions from five separate clients they receive a gift certificate for two to a local, high end restaurant.
The process is good for the accountant because it delivers good client service, helps identify staff having an interest in acquiring new skills and more directly contributing to the firm?s success, identifies opportunities for project, planning and consulting work and, ultimately, becomes a high probability source of additive revenue.
Many firms send out a year end planning letter that talks about things the clients can do before December 31st and also touches upon considerations they may find relevant for the upcoming year.? Unfortunately, we all know many clients never read them.? This telephone based process gets right in their face, but does so on the basis of you trying to do something that provides a benefit to them.? Needless to say, the two methodologies can be combined.
Neither Jan nor Bill has ever had a client push back or otherwise become upset about being contacted as described above.
If you have a staff person who is really into this and appears to have a talent for it you can easily have them contact many clients for several partners.? Because they are only fact gathering, he or she doesn?t have to know anything about the client unless there is something special, e.g. Beth is told that, ?this one is a non-profit, so just ask them X, not Y and Z.?
This is a very easy and effective means to accomplish several desirable goals with one action.?? Do you have a staff person who could be effective doing this?? Check it out ? write a script or create a bulletized list of ?talking points,? then do a little role playing.? If still in doubt, try a couple of test calls and then make a determination.? As some wag once said, if you?re going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.
