Weighing molecules one at a time: Physicists create first-ever mechanical device that measures mass of single molecule

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? A team led by scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have made the first-ever mechanical device that can measure the mass of individual molecules one at a time.

This new technology, the researchers say, will eventually help doctors diagnose diseases, enable biologists to study viruses and probe the molecular machinery of cells, and even allow scientists to better measure nanoparticles and air pollution.

The team includes researchers from the Kavli Nanoscience Institute at Caltech and Commissariat ? l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives, Laboratoire d'?lectronique des technologies de l'information (CEA-LETI) in Grenoble, France. A description of this technology, which includes nanodevices prototyped in CEA-LETI's facilities, appears in the online version of the journal Nature Nanotechnology on August 26.

The device -- which is only a couple millionths of a meter in size -- consists of a tiny, vibrating bridge-like structure. When a particle or molecule lands on the bridge, its mass changes the oscillating frequency in a way that reveals how much the particle weighs.

"As each particle comes in, we can measure its mass," says Michael Roukes, the Robert M. Abbey Professor of Physics, Applied Physics, and Bioengineering at Caltech. "Nobody's ever done this before."

The new instrument is based on a technique Roukes and his colleagues developed over the last 12 years. In work published in 2009, they showed that a bridge-like device -- called a nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) resonator -- could indeed measure the masses of individual particles, which were sprayed onto the apparatus. The difficulty, however, was that the measured shifts in frequencies depended not only on the particle's actual mass, but also on where the particle landed. Without knowing the particle's landing site, the researchers had to analyze measurements of about 500 identical particles in order to pinpoint its mass.

But with the new and improved technique, the scientists need only one particle to make a measurement. "The critical advance that we've made in this current work is that it now allows us to weigh molecules -- one by one -- as they come in," Roukes says.

To do so, the researchers analyzed how a particle shifts the bridge's vibrating frequency. All oscillatory motion is composed of so-called vibrational modes. If the bridge just shook in the first mode, it would sway side to side, with the center of the structure moving the most. The second vibrational mode is at a higher frequency, in which half of the bridge moves sideways in one direction as the other half goes in the opposite direction, forming an oscillating S-shaped wave that spans the length of the bridge. There is a third mode, a fourth mode, and so on. Whenever the bridge oscillates, its motion can be described as a mixture of these vibrational modes.

The team found that by looking at how the first two modes change frequencies when a particle lands, they could determine the particle's mass and position, explains Mehmet Selim Hanay, a postdoctoral researcher in Roukes's lab and first author of the paper. "With each measurement we can determine the mass of the particle, which wasn't possible in mechanical structures before."

Traditionally, molecules are weighed using a method called mass spectroscopy, in which tens of millions of molecules are ionized -- so that they attain an electrical charge -- and then interact with an electromagnetic field. By analyzing this interaction, scientists can deduce the mass of the molecules.

The problem with this method is that it does not work well for more massive particles -- like proteins or viruses -- which have a harder time gaining an electrical charge. As a result, their interactions with electromagnetic fields are too weak for the instrument to make sufficiently accurate measurements.

The new device, on the other hand, does work well for large particles. In fact, the researchers say, it can be integrated with existing commercial instruments to expand their capabilities, allowing them to measure a wider range of masses.

The researchers demonstrated how their new tool works by weighing a molecule called immunoglobulin M (IgM), an antibody produced by immune cells in the blood. By weighing each molecule -- which can take on different structures with different masses in the body -- the researchers were able to count and identify the various types of IgM. Not only was this the first time a biological molecule was weighed using a nanomechanical device, but the demonstration also served as a direct step toward biomedical applications. Future instruments could be used to monitor a patient's immune system or even diagnose immunological diseases. For example, a certain ratio of IgM molecules is a signature of a type of cancer called Waldenstr?m macroglobulinemia.

In the more distant future, the new instrument could give biologists a view into the molecular machinery of a cell. Proteins drive nearly all of a cell's functions, and their specific tasks depend on what sort of molecular structures attach to them -- thereby adding more heft to the protein -- during a process called posttranslational modification. By weighing each protein in a cell at various times, biologists would now be able to get a detailed snapshot of what each protein is doing at that particular moment in time.

Another advantage of the new device is that it is made using standard, semiconductor fabrication techniques, making it easy to mass-produce. That's crucial, since instruments that are efficient enough for doctors or biologists to use will need arrays of hundreds to tens of thousands of these bridges working in parallel. "With the incorporation of the devices that are made by techniques for large-scale integration, we're well on our way to creating such instruments," Roukes says. This new technology, the researchers say, will enable the development of a new generation of mass-spectrometry instruments.

"This result demonstrates how the Alliance for Nanosystems VLSI, initiated in 2006, creates a favorable environment to carry out innovative experiments with state-of-the-art, mass-produced devices," says Laurent Malier, the director of CEA-LETI. The Alliance for Nanosystems VLSI is the name of the partnership between Caltech's Kavli Nanoscience Institute and CEA-LETI. "These devices," he says,"will enable commercial applications, thanks to cost advantage and process repeatability."

cheap data recovery ? Computer Repair- Overnight PC Repair Los ...

Have you been ever quoted to pay thousands for data recovery?cheap Data-Recovery

Well, its not very uncommon thing actually. We had one client who said she paid $1700.00 to recover her documents and photos, and recently we had a client whos case I am going to describe to you here. She was quoted from $2600-$3500 to recover the data.

The biggest reason this happens, is because hard drives themselves are pretty complicated piece of technological equipment. Its not like anyone or everyone can take it a part, change a part or two and bam you have a working hard drive. They are much more complex than that and in some cases do require environment and equipment that costs thousands. But the big question for me was is it really that expensive to extract data from the hard drive as everyone quotes you?! because face it, many places do charge astronomical prices, which no regular person can afford, so unless you are a business you can maybe shell out a chunk of cash to get your stuff recovered, otherwise many people just forget about it.

Well until now of course. now at overnight pc repair you can get your data recovered for much less and virtually no risk to you whatsoever. If we recover your data you pay, if we don?t you don?t pay. its simple. and I can assure you the price tag to do that will be two, three or four times cheaper than what other places charge you.

This happened to our recent customer. Another company took his drive, kept it for 4 days doing so called logical data recovery and after 4 days they said: oops we can not do anything, we have to do physical data recovery on it and it will cost you anywhere from $2600-$3500. after hearing this our clients heart skipped a beat or two and he thought this was the end of his documents and pictures, until he brought it to us. 3 days later we extracted 85% of his files for a price that was 5 times lower!!!

The thing is, many companies do take advantage of the situation, because it is quite difficult process to recover data on hard drive that appears not to be working at first. So anyone who experiences this, is left with very little options to do anything. And truth is, in many cases it is not such a big deal and with few tricks and necessary tools files can be recovered easier than everyone makes it sound it is.

Call us at 818-532-9333 to get your data recovered if you live in Los Angeles or anywhere in USA. Or visit us at 22641 Ventura Boulevard, Woodland hills, CA 91364

Consider Calligraphy Wedding Invitations - Family Relationships Blog

August 25, 2012 on 10:08 pm | By admin | In Kids and Teens

If you want to get good wedding invations then you should consider calligraphy wedding invitations. Engraved invitations are generally applied to announce a extremely conventional style of wedding. This variety of invitation is pricey since an engraver ought to initially carve the image or message into a copper plate, ink the plate, and then push the plate down onto the paper. This creates the raised lettering on the paper. Mainly because of all the actions needed to make this kind of wedding invitation, this approach is time consuming and you will want to wait weeks for your invitations to be prepared.

Romney to feature personal side at convention

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is about to get personal.

The GOP's presidential nominee-to-be wants to use his four-day party next week in Florida to play up his life story following a summer filled with a barrage of TV ads ? courtesy of President Barack Obama and his allies ? that cast him as a ruthless and out-of-touch businessman.

He'll surround himself with his five sons, five daughters-in-law and 15 of his 18 grandchildren. Romney's wife, Ann, will play her biggest role yet. A parade of athletes Romney met as an Olympic organizer, such as hockey legend Mike Eruzione, will be on hand. So will doting parishioners he helped as a lay pastor in the Mormon Church in Boston.

From the stagecraft to the speakers' roster, the agenda for the convention that starts Monday is carefully crafted toward one goal: introducing Romney to the country on his own terms while projecting him as the leader the country needs in tough economic times ? and Obama as a failure on that front.

"We go to a convention and for the first time define Mitt a little bit better," said Ron Kaufman, a top Romney adviser.

Aides dismiss the notion that the former Massachusetts governor needs to repair a damaged image after a summer of negative ads and a recent string of missteps, including Friday when he waded into a debunked conspiracy theory by raising the issue of Obama's citizenship.

"No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate," Romney joked at a rally in the suburbs of Detroit while visiting his native state. "They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."

Romney later Friday in a CBS News interview said he had not intended the comment as a swipe at Obama.

Just a day earlier, Romney caused himself another potential headache when he said big business was "doing fine" due to off-shore tax havens. It was a comment that echoed a claim similar to one he had criticized Obama for making, and it also reminded voters of Romney's own overseas accounts.

In the coming days, Romney's team will put the finishing touches on a program that ? whether acknowledged by the campaign or not ? is intended to turn the page from a difficult summer. Among his hiccups: a foreign trip marred by self-inflicted troubles.

The convention will be Romney's most consequential shot yet to send a precise message to Americans: that he has the experience and resolve to strengthen the economy and the nation.

But Romney's challenge is that most people have an opinion about him. Just 8 percent of people in a new Associated Press-GfK poll say they don't know how they feel about him.

Romney's team appears undaunted.

"We look to tell all parts of the governor's story," said Russ Schriefer, a top Romney adviser who has overseen the details of the convention. "We can show that Gov. Romney is uniquely qualified to take on the problems that this country's facing."

The first three nights of the convention will be aimed at building the case against Obama ? specifically on his stewardship on the economy ? with speeches and videos featuring everyday Americans. Expect tough critiques from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday and vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan on Wednesday.

As Schriefer put it, the plan is to "lay down the predicate and make the case why President Obama has failed."

Come Thursday, Romney himself will take the elaborate stage ? a Frank Lloyd Wright-styled set that Romney himself helped design ? with a speech intended to show voters that he's serious and thoughtful. He will defend his business experience, discuss his time as a church pastor, and highlight his record at the 2002 winter Olympics.

He's spent the past year testing and sharpening the stories he will tell in front of smaller crowds, beginning in the primary campaign more than a year ago.

Before he takes the stage, beneficiaries of the counseling Romney did as a lay pastor in the church will give testimonials about him.

In the run-up to the convention, Romney has started telling his story in earnest.

He wrote an op-ed piece for the Wall Street Journal this week explaining what he had learned as president and CEO of Bain Capital, a private equity firm he founded in Boston. The firm's dealings, including closed plants in key states, have provided fodder for Obama and Democrats.

Romney used the column to highlight the company's biggest successes. "A good idea is not enough for a business to succeed," he wrote. "It requires a talented team, a good business plan and capital to execute it."

The Romneys ? married more than 40 years ? also are featured in Sunday's issue of Parade magazine. And they sat together for an interview for Fox News Sunday during which Mrs. Romney makes pancakes. They were taping another interview Friday in the Detroit-area movie theater where they had their first date.

The importance of Mrs. Romney's role was underscored Friday, when Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a rising national figure in the party, agreed to give up his prime-time speaking slot on Tuesday for the candidate's wife.

Broadcast television networks were not planning to cover Monday night, when she was scheduled to speak.

Anti-Aging Skin Care Products ?

Many people, especially the women, are finding great ways to make their skin look younger and clearer while hiding their real age. There are actually a lot of ways to reveal that radiance on your skin. Truth of the matter is that skin problems get entirely discernible as we age. But we can somehow get away with that. Here are some tips to help you achieve what you desire of your skin.

You can opt to use antioxidants. There are a variety of antioxidants available in the market, but of course never rush. Have yourself checked first by your dermatologist and make use of what he/she prescribes for your age and skin because that suits you best. Remember that each of us has a unique skin that needs a unique blend of touch and treatment, as well.

Another thing you should do to promote anti-aging skin is to treat cystic acne. The best way to solve this acne problem is to use a warm compress instead of sulfur, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid for that matter. Though sulfur, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid can effectively treat your acne, but take note that those big red bums repressed deep in your skin are already resistant to these chemicals, and therefore won?t be healed. With the use of warm compress, your blood flow will be stimulated allowing you spots to open and thus increase your body?s capacity to heal it.

Using skin supplements is also a good way to maintain a healthy skin. The compound, beta-carotene, is the best and most effective way to keep your skin healthy according to specialists. It has a vitamin A exfoliator and antioxidant ingredient that facilitates the skin cells to turn over quickly. Beauty products are also good cover ups for aging skin. However, they must be used appropriately. Experts say that one should follow a schedule by using beauty products with antioxidants only in the morning to protect your skin the entire day while exfoliants should only be used at night to help restore and rebuild skin cells.

Now is the time to decide to use these anti-aging treatments before anything gets worse. No one would want to see their skin with deep lines, wrinkles, or other aging skin problems as time goes by. Though this is normal, but somehow we are given the chance to do something about it. It?s never too late to visit your dermatologist and ask for the best anti-aging solution to your skin. Remember that our skin is very important to us since this is our primary defense against foreign matters that may enter our body. Aside from that, you would also feel good about yourself if you have that young, glowing, and healthy looking skin.

2 dead, 9 wounded in shooting near Empire State Building

Nine people were wounded and two people were killed near the Empire State Building in Midtown Manhattan on Friday after a disgruntled women's accessories designer named Jeffrey Johnson fatally shot his 41-year-old former boss, Steven Ercolino. Police shot and killed the gunman near the tourist entrance of the landmark skyscraper.

Fifty-three year-old Johnson lost his job last year during a corporate downsizing at Hazan Imports, where Ercolino was a vice president. He returned to his office Friday morning to target his former supervisor.

The shooting occurred at 9:03 a.m. ET on West 33rd Street.

Johnson followed his former co-worker down 33rd Street and shot him outside of Legends Bar, according to the New York Post. It is unclear if he fired into a crowd of pedestrians outside of the Empire State Building, or if pedestrians were caught in crossfire, reported the New York Daily News.

A construction worker who witnessed the shooting followed the suspect and then alerted police who were posted nearby.?As the officers approached Johnson, he pulled his gun and fired on the officers. They returned fire and killed him, New York City Mayor Michael?Bloomberg said.

None of the other people who were shot were seriously wounded and they are all expected to recover. Some of those wounded may have been hit by police gunfire, Bloomberg said.

After the shooting, police immediately cordoned off a one-block perimeter around the Empire State Building. Around 10 a.m., a lone tourist bus headed down Fifth Avenue, and a guide could be heard over the bus's microphone explaining that they were nearing the landmark. As police waved the bus to detour down 36th Street, the guide was openly mystified. "I don't know what's going on, folks," he said, as the bus turned. The bus's passengers looked up at the sky at a news helicopter floated overhead. Some stood, clutching their cameras.

Along 35th street, hundreds of people photographed the scene with iPhones and iPads. Officers could be seen standing in the middle of 34th Street around a scene surrounded by police tape. Television producers roamed the crowd looking for witnesses. "Was anybody here when this happened? Was anybody here when this happened?" one NBC producer yelled.

Word of the shooting spread rapidly on social media networks.

"On 5th avenue surrounded by helicopters and police," @CeciliaHalling wrote on Twitter. "I'm very glad I wasn't 20 blocks further down half an hour ago."

Yahoo News will update this story as more details are known.
