Smokers and health insurance premiums ? db's Medical Rants

As nation grapples with soaring health costs, do penalties for smokers and the obese make sense?

Here is the problem ? part 1.

We all know that smokers have significantly greater health care expenditures than non-smokers. ?

So let's return to the original question: Why provoke a backlash? If 1 in 5 U.S. adults smoke, and 1 in 3 are obese, why not just get off their backs and let them go on with their (probably shortened) lives?

Because it's not just about them, say some health economists, bioethicists and public health researchers.

"Your freedom is likely to be someone else's harm," said Daniel Callahan, senior research scholar at a bioethics think-tank, the Hastings Center.

Smoking has the most obvious impact. Studies have increasingly shown harm to nonsmokers who are unlucky enough to work or live around heavy smokers. And several studies have shown heart attacks and asthma attack rates fell in counties or cities that adopted big smoking bans.

As a libertarian, I understand that smokers have freedom. ?But since I pay for health insurance, their smoking raises my rates. ?

That's the rationale for a provision in the Affordable Care Act ? "Obamacare" to its detractors ? that starting next year allows health insurers to charge smokers buying individual policies up to 50 percent higher premiums. A 60-year-old could wind up paying nearly $5,100 on top of premiums.

The new law doesn't allow insurers to charge more for people who are overweight, however.

Part 2 ? obesity

This one is more complex than smoking. ?We can test patients for smoking regularly, and so can insurance companies. ?Money does change smoking behavior. ?

Those who complain that they have a right to smoke and not pay higher insurance are in a word selfish. ?I do not want to pay their extra medical expenses. ?How do we resolve the conflict.

One could make the same argument for obesity. ?Here is the problem, how do we define obesity? ?Smoking is easy. ?You either smoke or you do not. ?But what is obesity? ?How we do find a cut-point for obesity?

So let us address the smoking issue now and continue to struggle with the obesity issue.

Research teams from Russia, the United Kingdom and United States have each spearheaded drilling efforts over the past few years to pierce and sample separate subglacial Antarctic lakes. Russian scientists reported last year piercing into Lake Vostok but has so far turned up no identifiable life. Those researchers are now working to analyze a new sample of ice recently retrieved from that drill project. Last month, the British team suspended its efforts for this summer season (which ends next month) to reach Lake Ellsworth.

The just-completed borehole into Lake Whillans ?marks the first successful retrieval of clean whole samples from an Antarctic subglacial lake,? the U.S. team reported today. ?Water and sediment samples returned to the surface are now being processed to answer seminal questions related to the structure and function of subglacial microbial life, climate history, and contemporary ice sheet dynamics.?

A research team led by Frank Rack, of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, recently developed and field-tested the novel hot-water drill used to cut through the roughly half-mile-deep sheet of ice to reach Lake Whillans. ?Over the whole Antarctic continent, there are more than 340 [subglacial] lakes,? he notes. ?We selected this one because we know that it goes up and down, which means that the water underneath the ice sheet is periodically filling up the lake, then draining out again.?

Researchers have monitored this cycle through a rise and fall of the surface of that portion of the ice sheet covering the lake. Each cycle can last up to a decade, Rack says.

A video camera and series of sampling instruments will be periodically lowered down the borehole in the day or two available before this portal begins freezing shut again. ?Lake Whillans has already presented surprises,? according to Doug Fox, a reporter embedded with the drill research team, which is camped out less than 400 miles from the South Pole. ?For one, the lake has turned out to be only five or six feet deep ? shallower than the 20 to 30 feet that people expected based on seismic measurements,? Fox reported in a blog on the Discover website.

When I met with the Lake Whillans research team, last month, they planned to begin analyses of retrieved water and sediment within minutes of it reaching the surface. A series of mobile research labs were recently hauled to the Lake Whillans drill site. At least one lab will be used to study the chemistry of the water. Another will focus on probing for signs of microbial life ? chiefly bacteria and viruses.

Nipro's Whitening Dental Care : DigInfo - sidneyvalajaga

DigInfo ? movie.diginfo.tv ? Nipro showed their new Poly-de-Clean-Gel whitening toothpaste, tablets and gum which use a natural condensed phosphate to white teeth. Other whitening toothpastes sometimes use harsh polishing agents which can wear away enamel and weaken teeth or foul tasting detergents which can cause ulcers in the mouth but this toothpaste uses only natural ingredients. The phosphates act immediately since they stick to the stain?s particles and remove them. They have been researching this product for about ten years and it will be released later this year.

'30 Rock': Liz Sees Some Very Familiar Behavior In Her New Twins (VIDEO)

In typical "TGS" fashion, with the show's life on the line, nobody stepped up to help Liz try and save it. And so, she found herself stuck in the studio while Criss was headed to the airport to meet their new twins on the penultimate half-hour of "30 Rock." A mix-up meant the kids were coming earlier than the couple had anticipated.

And so, finally Tracy and Jenna stepped up -- by quitting. In fact, everyone quit the show, so that Liz could do what really mattered. She quickly left them behind, only to sort of find them again once she arrived at the airport.

The twins arrived, and they were both unexpected and familiar. For one thing, they were a little blonde, white girl and a little black boy. For another thing, they exhibited almost identical personalities to Jenna and Tracy.

"Is that a camera? I'm going to need you on my good side," their daughter, Janet, declared.

Then their new son, Terry, held up an animal carrier. "What up, Liz Lemon?" he said. "I will not be able to attend school tomorrow because of an issue with my lizard."

Looks like the end of "TGS" won't mean as much change as Liz might have thought. As for "30 Rock," come back next Thursday for the one-hour series finale at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.

Good Reads: Boomtown slum, democracy in progress, and 'rewilding' in the Netherlands

This week's good reads include a day in Kenya's bustling Kibera slum, the struggle to promote democracy in the Arab world, and a radical conservation theory in the Netherlands.

By Allison Terry,?Correspondent / January 7, 2013

A hairdresser braids a woman?s hair in her salon in Kenya?s Kibera slum.

The image of an African shantytown does not usually conjure up hope for economic prosperity. But Kibera, one of Nairobi?s slums and arguably Africa?s largest slum, is exactly that for the Kenyans who call it home. In The Economist, a writer chronicled a day in Kibera, describing the slum?s ebbs and flows, capturing its entrepreneurial spirit. People from all over Kenya leave their towns and villages for a chance to find work in Kibera?s ?thriving economic machine.?

The half-mile-by-two-mile area accommodates roughly 1 million people, wedged together in repurposed wood-and-corrugated-tin-roof structures. The alleys that wind through the slum vary in size, but there is no room for cars. Many of the residents work in nearby factories or offices. Others find economic opportunity in providing goods and services for Kibera?s residents.

When Cecilia Achieng moved to the slum, she started a school, at first renting space from an empty church. She eventually saved enough money to build six makeshift classrooms. After school, Ms. Achieng starts her second job: catering. She caters church events, funerals, and is even trying to get into weddings. In the evening, Achieng goes door to door offering her services as a hairdresser.

?To equate slums with idleness and misery is to misunderstand them,? the correspondent writes. ?Slums are far from hopeless places; many are not where economic losers end up, but rather reservoirs of tomorrow?s winners.?

The promise of the Arab Spring

As post-Arab Spring countries struggle to establish democratic institutions, pessimism about their ultimate success misses a broader lesson: Stable democracies have historically evolved from violent uprisings, initial failures, and stumbling blocks.

?These troubles ... are not a bug but a feature ? not signs of problems with democracy but evidence of the difficult, messy process of political development through which societies purge themselves of the vestiges of dictatorship and construct new and better democratic orders,? writes Sheri Berman in Foreign Affairs.

Critics who see Egypt, Libya, and other transitioning countries as democratic failures ignore the inherited social, cultural, and political dynamics in these countries, and a broader historical perspective. New democracies are not blank slates, writes Ms. Berman. In the aftermath of overthrowing dictators, countries must overcome the baggage that comes with authoritarian regimes ? distrust, animosity, and lack of civil organizations to deal with people?s demands. Islamism is filling that void in Egypt after Hosni Mubarak?s fall as religious organizations were the only places where people could participate and express themselves.

HIV-like viruses in non-human primates have existed much longer than previously thought

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Viruses similar to those that cause AIDS in humans were present in non-human primates in Africa at least 5 million years ago and perhaps up to 12 million years ago, according to study published January 24 in the Open Access journal PLOS Pathogens by scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Until now, researchers have hypothesized that such viruses originated much more recently.

HIV-1, the virus responsible for AIDS, infiltrated the human population in the early 20th century following multiple transmissions of a similar chimpanzee virus known as SIVcpz. Previous work to determine the age of HIV-like viruses, called lentiviruses, by comparing their genetic blueprints has calculated their origin to be tens of thousands of years ago.

However, other researchers have suspected this time frame to be much too recent. Michael Emerman, Ph.D., a virologist and member of the Human Biology Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Alex Compton, a graduate student in the Emerman Lab, describe the use of a technique to estimate the extent to which primates and lentiviruses have coexisted by tracking the changes in a host immunity gene called APOBEC3G that were induced by ancient viral challenges.

They report that this host immunity factor is evolving in tandem with a viral gene that defends the virus against APOBEC3G, which allowed them to determine the minimum age for the association between primates and lentiviruses to be around 5 or 6 million years ago, and possibly up to 12 million years ago.

These findings suggest that HIV-like infections in primates are much older than previously thought, and they have driven selective changes in antiviral genes that have incited an evolutionary arms race that continues to this day. The study also confirms that viruses similar to HIV that are present in various monkey species today are the descendants of ancient pathogens in primates that have shaped how the immune system fights infections.

"More than 40 non-human primate species in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with strains of HIV-related viruses," Emerman said. "Since some of these viruses may have the potential to infect humans as well, it is important to know their origins."

I t?n?i w? ka huri au ki te Reo P?keh?.

Here I humbly stand below Ranginui, on Papatu?nuku, looking with wonder at the great mountains and the descendants of T?ne.?

To the sacred Temple, to all the houses of this pa, long may you stand strong.

To our esteemed elders, you are the great orators of the bench and the beautiful voices of rongo maraeroa. Many greetings to you for celebrating this day.

To you, the President, warm greetings to you.

The Green Party has arrived to celebrate the birthday of this wonderful leader of the country, Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana. I pass on to you the greetings of all the members of the Green Party.

I am the female co-leader of the Green Party, of Ati Hau nui a Paparangi and Kahungunu ki Wairarapa.? Greetings on the kaupapa that brings us together today -? the wellbeing of the M?ori people and all the people of New Zealand.? The Mangai (Ratana) was one the very best in the country at uniting people.

We in the Green Party deeply believe in the benefits of honouring the Treaty. We know the M?ori text is the correct legal text.? And the enhancement of the Treaty is a key part of our Charter.

May the greetings never end for your hospitality towards us today.? It is a great opportunity for me to speak to you today to celebrate the birthday of this rangatira.

My dad would bring us to Ratana every year.? It was always a big crowd and a big party.? Behind the bandstand there, I had my first kiss (just a kiss, mind) when I was twelve.? We?d stay in our bus and be part of this great celebration.? Sometimes we?d watch the politicians come on to the marae.

I can see my dad now, leaning against the verandah, in his shorts and jandals, watching the politicians and saying ?they talk a lot but they don?t say much?.

He was not a learned man, but he had a strong view about politics.? For him politics was about whether or not there was enough work, enough housing, a decent school for his kids. It was about whether his wh?nau had enough to eat.? His politics was the politics of the wh?nau.? And all the talk in the world meant nothing if his wh?nau still struggled for those basics.

But he?d be proud to see me stand here, alongside you, to be part of this celebration still and to be talking on this paepae to the morehu.

As long as I held to the kaupapa of wh?nau politics.

In my work over the past few years, I have put child poverty at the centre of everything I do.

Central to wh?nau politics is the right of our tamariki to a good life and a fair future. Central to wh?nau politics is the right of our tamariki to a strong and healthy wh?nau.?? Central to that vision is the rightful implementation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a return to the values of love and compassion in politics. This was the life?s work of the prophet.

Eliminating poverty is not a matter for charity, it is an act of justice.? And it starts with the basics.

I talk to too many wh?nau who have been forced to move homes too many times, who are trapped in a no win cycle of uprooting their kids, changing schools and starting again because they can?t afford to keep up with rent rises, or the home is so cold and mouldy it?s making their kids sick, and they can?t afford to buy one of their own.

The cost of groceries, power and school fees is so high that they barely manage to get through each day, let alone put money aside each week to save for the deposit on their own home.? I know we can do better for our wh?nau.

So today, in honour of Ratana?s political tradition and as the first Greens Co-leader to speak on this paepae I have three wh?nau focussed solutions for a Home for Life to present to you.

Many of us here will remember our parents and grandparents using the family benefit to buy their home, or maybe the old M?ori Affairs loans.? Loads of kids in my generation and earlier generations grew up in their own home because their parents had access to a low interest mortgage, with no deposit needed.?? It is still considered by thousands of New Zealanders as the single most critical support that a government can give to a young family ? a secure affordable home.

As we were writing our Home for Life policy, the Labour Party announced their plan to build 100,000 new low cost homes. This is fantastic news and we support this policy.? But it will work only for those who can afford a mortgage.? Most of our wh?nau cannot? and the Green Party policy will help fix that.

So, first we would set up a Progressive Ownership housing scheme.? The government will build more state houses, with iwi, local government and community groups ? modern, efficient, healthy homes.

Families would rent these homes and enter into Progressive Ownership agreements with the government.? Families would pay a basic, fixed rent and be able to make extra payments to buy shares in the house.

Eventually, the family can buy the entire property or they can cash-up those savings to use as deposit on another house.

This means that wh?nau on low incomes, too low to get a mortgage, could start the process of owning their own homes, using the support of government, like we did in the past.? There would be no mortgage, so no risk of families losing their homes and they could just pay the basic rent when times get tough. It would be affordable for our wh?nau.

Because our focus is on the best life for our tamariki, families with children would get first preference.

Secure tenancy

But for many reasons people will still need, or prefer to rent. Seventy per cent of poor children live in a rental house.? Yet tenants are constantly worried about being kicked out, about asking the landlord to fix it up in case they kicked out and always worried about the rent increasing.

So we propose two major changes to better protect tenants.

First, we would give tenants a first right of renewal on their tenancy. A right of renewal gives renting families security knowing that they can continue to live in their home if they want and they can raise legitimate concerns with the landlord without fear they?ll be kicked out.

Second, we would change the law so rent increases would be limited to once every twelve months and the process for deciding increases will have to be in the tenancy agreement.? That means families will have certainty about rent increases, when they will happen and how much they will be.

These proposals offer better security for landlords and allow wh?nau to build stronger links within their communities and give our kids more secure homes.

Warrant of fitness for rentals

Our third proposal is to make homes healthier and safer for our kids. Too many damp and cold homes are making too many kids sick. In Christchurch, investors are buying up broken homes and renting them to poor families, families who do not deserve to be ripped off.

We say a rental house needs to meet a minimum healthy standard.? Houses will need to be insulated, weather-tight, have heating, hot and cold tap water, a toilet, a shower or a bath, electricity and a stove before it can be rented out.? Would you believe they don?t have to at the moment?

Landlords are in the business of providing a service and their product ought to meet minimum standards, just like any other product or service does.? They can of course access the Greens Warm Up New Zealand fund to help with the cost of insulation.

Our children should no longer be forced to live in cold, damp substandard houses that make them sick.

These three proposals make up our Home for Life package.? They are practical solutions to our housing crisis and offer wh?nau and families a real chance at decent housing and home ownership.

I want to acknowledge Whaea Tariana.? She has been such an inspiration to me even where we have disagreed.? I have become strong advocate of her Wh?nau Ora vision because I can see how it transforms and empowers wh?nau, in a way never tried in politics before.? I am a fierce advocate for the right of every wh?nau to a warm dry home, to good school and to a decent dignified income.? And for every solution that helps deliver this, as Wh?nau Ora does.

In my work over the last ten years, I have seen how Maori politics has transformed.? We are no longer caged within one, or two, political frames.? Ng? Uri are strong and diverse.? We have taken every opportunity for new political power and held politicians to account.

Ratana is still the first place politicians come because here we have to face the people.? And show whether we have lived up to the kaupapa of wh?nau politics.

I hope that I have honoured you, and the memory of my dad, today.

T?na koutou, t?na koutou t?na koutou k?toa.

But for me, the most exciting bonus has been?Mashable?s incredibly collaborative nature. Although the brand is growing exponentially,?Mashable?retains its small-business mentality, in that each department interacts closely with the other. For example, with the site?s recent redesign, I?ve been able to learn more development and product tools than I ever dreamed. And you can bet that?s going on the ol? resume.

Where do you find your inspiration when writing articles?
As a writer, I grew up with the phrase, ?Write about what you know.? In my case and for what I love to write about, it?s more like, ?Write about?who?you know.? Most of my inspiration comes from what my friends and loved ones are experiencing, what they talk about over cocktails, how they?re tackling generational challenges. These are the kinds of things that make social media so relatable?so I approach my writing with the same mentality.

Not your typical work environment, Buck and her Mashable associates get down to business at a media summit.

What is one of the most fun articles you?ve ever written?
That would have to be an article entitled 20 Things Your Most Annoying Friends Do on Facebook. Think humblebrags, oversharing, and baby spamming.?I had a running list in my head (as I?m positive most social media users do), but I also chose to send out a company-wide email asking my co-workers about their biggest Facebook pet peeves. Let?s just say, I think we may have broken the record for longest email chain in company history. That?s when I knew I had a winner and, sure enough, the article became?Mashable?s top performer for the week.

What type of content does the best on your site/what types of posts tend to go viral?
Web virality is a fickle, fickle beast. What I?ve learned, from speaking with?viral experts, is that viral content is largely arbitrary?it?s nearly impossible to predict what Web users will enjoy and share. But?Mashable?(and mostly our Watercooler channel) continues to become as fluent as possible in the Web zeitgeist, remaining on the pulse of conversation at all times. Often, that means combing the Web for a thrilling new stunt video or encountering a news-related political meme that?we, ourselves, enjoy or find valuable. After all, we are our readership. If we enjoy it, chances are our audience will, too.

Buck (back, center) portrays Ermahgerd Gersberms Girl in the 12 Memes of Christmas, alongside her Mashable colleagues.

What do you see as the future of content?
It?s been fascinating to watch content and commerce overlap, especially as brands and publishers continue to collaborate. Brands are investing big bucks into content advertising by integrating branded apps,?shareable?media, and valuable tools into their overall marketing strategies. The challenge has been for traditional media to approach the reverse: to monetize by seamlessly merging advertising and marketing programs into their content. I have faith that we?ll see publishers innovate and upend content?s status quo in the coming year, in really exciting new ways.

It?s not every day that Grumpy Cat stops by the Mashable office to say hi. Lucky.

(AP) ? Japanese and U.S. investigators began a probe Monday into the maker of the lithium ion batteries used in Boeing's grounded 787 jets.

Tsutomu Nishijima, a spokesman for GS Yuasa, the battery manufacturer, said investigators visited the company's headquarters in Kyoto, Japan and that Yuasa was cooperating with the probe.

All 50 of the 787 Dreamliners that Boeing has delivered to airlines were grounded after an overheated battery forced the emergency landing of an All Nippon Airways 787 flight last week in western Japan. Boeing has halted deliveries of new planes until it can address the electrical problems.

Monday's investigation involved an introductory meeting and factory tour, with deeper studies into product quality and other issues to follow as the probe continues, said Tatsuyuki Shimazu, the chief air worthiness engineer at the Civil Aviation Bureau's Aviation Safety Department.

Two investigators from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and an investigator from Japan's government were conducting the probe into how the batteries are made and assembled and into any quality issues, he said.

"We are in the midst of collecting information, so as to whether there is a problem or not has not yet been determined," Shimazu said.

Nishijima of GS Yuasa said he could not comment on details of the investigation.

The burned insides of the ANA battery showed it received voltage in excess of its design limits. However, a battery that caught fire in a Japan Airlines Boeing 787 in Boston earlier this month was found not to have been overcharged.

U.S. government investigators said there could still be problems with wiring or other charging components.

In the U.S., investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board planned to meet Tuesday with officials from Securaplane Technologies Inc., manufacturer of the charger for the 787s lithium ion batteries, at the company's headquarters in Tucson, Ariz., said Kelly Nantel, a spokeswoman for the board.

PSA Stoohs Space Camera broadcasting Moon Jupiter conjunction right now

Right now, the Moon and Jupiter are close enough that they look more like next door neighbors of differing size than two planetary bodies vast distances away from each other. Look out of any window (assuming it's dark where you are) and you should be able to see the duo less than a pen length apart -- which is the last time we'll be able to see this conjunction until 2026. If you aren't in a position to watch the celestial event from the comfort of your hemisphere, the Slooh Space Camera is broadcasting the galactic happenings right now. If you'd like to watch, head on past the break to catch the live feed.

Slooh Space Camera to Broadcast Live Feeds of Super Close Moon / Jupiter Conjunction

On Monday, January 21st, the Moon will appear amazingly close in the sky to the largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter. The Waxing Gibbous Moon - the lunar phase between first quarter Moon and a full Moon - will be approximately one degree south of Jupiter appearing to be only a pen width apart. This will be closest conjunction between the two celestial bodies until 2026.

Slooh Space Camera will cover the event live on Slooh.com, free to the public, Monday, January 21st at 6:00 PM PST / 9:00 PM EST / 02:00 UTC (1/22) - International times here: http://goo.gl/xySeo - accompanied by real-time discussions with Slooh President, Patrick Paolucci, Astronomy Magazine columnist, Bob Berman, and astro-imager Matt Francis of the Prescott Observatory. Viewers can watch live on their PC or IOS/Android mobile device at t-minus zero.

By good fortune, the Great Red Spot will be traveling across the middle of Jupiter's disk during Slooh's live broadcast.

If skies are clear, individuals can view the conjunction by looking at the Moon and finding the brightest star in the sky next to the Moon, which will be Jupiter. Individuals with binoculars or telescope may capture more detail of Jupiter, including some of the satellites.

Tanning industry dismissal of skin cancer threat draws doctors' ire

A new campaign by the tanning industry to promote the safety of sunbed use has come under fierce attack from the American Academy of Dermatology, which is accusing the industry of making claims that are "ridiculous" and unsupported by scientific evidence.

In the latest exchange between the two sides, the dermatologists blasted the newly formed American Suntanning Association for disputing the medical consensus that tanning indoors increases the risk of skin cancers, including melanoma, the deadliest kind.

The launch last month of the tanning association, made up of 1,400 salon owners, steps up the $5 billion industry's campaign to defend itself against mounting evidence of the harms caused by tanning indoors. It builds on what has been??an extraordinary effort to portray doctors and other health authorities as conspiring to unnecessarily scare the public about tanning,?as FairWarning reported?in August.

The tanning association bluntly describes its strategy in a document on its letterhead that was posted last month on TanToday, an online industry forum: "Promoting the indoor tanning industry will require retention of scientists throughout the world to help us debunk the scientific reports being used against us, and a major PR and lobbying campaign to bring the truth about indoor tanning to the government and to the public at large."

The academy of dermatology said the tanning association's recent statements about the risks and benefits of tanning "are ridiculous and there is no data to support them. Indoor tanning is dangerous."

In response, the tanning association said: "The public does not benefit from the continuation of a protracted, sound-bite oriented fight between professional sunbed salons and anti-UV [ultraviolet light] lobbying groups? We promote a fair and balanced message about UV exposure.''

Alex Howe, a spokesman for the tanning association also attempted to distance the organization from the document posted on TanToday, saying it is not the group's official position. He did not respond to follow-up questions about why the document was prepared.

However, the tanning association has hired a major public relations firm, is planning a lobbying campaign?and, Howe said, will work with?"the many scientists who already support a balanced message."

In a podcast?last week,?Doug McNabb, a board member of the tanning association, described the new group's goal: "Our main objective has to be to get more people in tanning beds." The board member, McNabb, added: "The direction we're going to take is going to be around media relations and regulatory relations that direct people to indoor tanning salons."

The World Health Organization says ultraviolet light from sunbeds causes cancer. DeAnn Lazovich, a cancer epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota Cancer Center, whose own research has linked sunbed use to melanoma, said the industry's long-running efforts to cast doubt on the science are just "smoke and mirrors" and an attempt to continue selling a service linked to cancer.

"They say, 'Tan responsibly,' but I think it is irresponsible for them to promote their product when we know it is a cause of skin cancer," said Lazovich, whose work previously has been attacked by the tanning industry.

Jerod Stapleton, an assistant professor of medicine at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey who has studied the tanning industry, said many of the contrary studies cited by indoor tanning proponents are not peer reviewed and appear to rely on cherry-picked data, have methodological flaws or have been funded by industry. "It's an interesting way of going about it," he said. "If you don't like what the science says, just go do your own."

Jan Meshon, a member of the tanning association, sees it differently. In a ?press release, Meshon said: "Consumers who choose to tan ? and it should be their choice ? need to be able to do so based on correct information about the potential benefits and risks of UV exposure. When organizations who benefit by improperly vilifying all UV exposure compare the manageable risks of sunlight to arsenic and plutonium in public statements, something's seriously wrong."

The prominent public relations firm hired by the tanning association, the Global Strategy Group, lists Goldman Sachs, General Electric and the New York Yankees among its clients.

Howe, the tanning association's spokesperson, would not respond to questions about the group's legislative strategy. But the industry wants to convince the Food and Drug Administration to refrain from tightening restrictions on sunbeds, which?the American Cancer Society and other groups are advocating.

Even before the new group formed, the industry was trying to prevent states and local governments from passing laws making it illegal for teens to tan indoors. At least 30 states already have imposed some limits on teen tanning, and Vermont and California ban anyone under age 18 from using a sunbed.

The industry has argued that sunbeds are a good source of Vitamin D, which is created by the body in response to UV light. It blames dermatologists for scaring people from the sun and inducing an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency in the process.

As FairWarning has reported, indoor tanning's proponents ? including a network of non-profit organizations with ties to tanning salons ? tout the vitamin as a panacea for ills ranging from autism to breast cancer. However, the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academy of Sciences, says there isn't enough evidence to say the vitamin provides any benefits other than improving bone health and disputes the notion that there is an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency.

As noted last week by the academy of dermatology, in 2010 the Federal Trade Commission reached a settlement with another industry group, the Indoor Tanning Association, for making misleading statements about the health benefits of sunbeds. Separately, the Texas Attorney General has sued a salon chain for claiming sunbeds reduce the risk of cancer and provide other health benefits. That case is set to go to trial in September.

The dermatology group, in its recent statement, specifically criticized the new industry group for claiming that research pointing to indoor tanning's ill effects is misleading. The new industry group maintains that much of this research wrongly lumps in sunbed use at professional salons ? which it contends is less risky ? with sunbed use at doctor's offices and home, which it claims is more dangerous. When sunbed use in salons is considered on its own, "the risk virtually disappears," the tanning group said.

The dermatologists dismissed that claim, saying ultraviolet light is used in treatments for some skin conditions, including psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. The "crucial disparity," said the dermatologists' group, is that the procedure is done by a medical doctor with appropriate training and expertise. "This type of medical care is not provided at an indoor tanning salon, where operators have minimal knowledge about the potential side effects of UV light," the statement said.

FairWarning is a nonprofit, online investigative news organization focused on safety and health issues.

Linchpin of skin response to UVA light discovered

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Researchers have strengthened their understanding of how skin cells called melanocytes sense ultraviolet light and act to protect themselves with melanin. In a new study, they report experiments showing that an ion channel well-known elsewhere in the body for its chemical sensitivity, plays a central role in this process.

Last year, a team of researchers at Brown University discovered that certain skin cells use a light-sensitive receptor found outside of the eye to sense ultraviolet light and quickly begin pumping out melanin to protect against DNA damage. In a new study, lab members identify a key player in that biomolecular chain of events that could someday become a pharmacological target for improving this protective response.

The new discovery, published the week of Jan. 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is that human melaoncyte skin cells rely on an ion channel called TRPA1 to allow a flood of calcium ions into the cells when they are exposed to UVA light. The resulting abundance of calcium ions signals the cell to begin making melanin, the pigment responsible for the tanning response in people.

The discovery "is exciting because it confirms this phototransduction pathway is similar to those found in the eye."Several experiments described in the paper show that TRPA1, which is known from a number of other appearances elsewhere in the body, is an essential step in the skin's response to UVA light, said senior author Elena Oancea, assistant professor of medical science in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biotechnology at Brown.

As a matter of basic science, the finding strengthens the evidence of a striking parallel between the skin's response to UVA light and the way the eye detects light.

"Its exciting because it confirms this phototransduction pathway is similar to those found in the eye. It consists of a light-sensitive receptor, molecular signaling cascade, and an ion channel," Oancea said. "The involvement of an ion channel makes this pathway a lot more like other phototransduction pathways."

In other parts of the body, TRPA1 has been shown to help detect pungent but benign chemicals, such as those in intensely flavorful foods. Oancea and lead author Nicholas Bellono said the chemical sensitivity of TRPA1 offers the intriguing possibility that it could become a target for experiments to boost melanin production.

"TRPA1 ion channels are involved in the detection of pungent chemicals such as cinnamaldehyde, wasabi, and mustard oil, and we've now found it's important for this melanin response," Bellono said. "There is a possibility that we can pharmacologically alter pigmentation through regulation of this ion channel."

Oancea and Bellono emphasized, however, that people who go out in the sun should always take widely recommended precautions to protect their skin, such as using high-SPF commercial sunscreens or wearing protective hats and clothing.

Finding the channel

From the prior research in Oancea's lab, Bellono knew he was looking for some kind of molecular pathway that would start with a light sensitive receptor and trigger an elevated level of calcium ions in the melanocytes.

It seemed possible that a TRP ion channel would be involved because TRPs are involved in phototransduction elsewhere in the body that lead to an increase in intracellular calcium. There are, however, many types of TRP channels, and the molecular identity of the UVA-activated channel in melanocytes was not apparent. Oancea confessed that she even suspected another as the culprit. But many experiments later, the team hit on TRPA1 and amassed considerable evidence to confirm its vital role.

In one experiment, for example, they treated melanocytes with "antagonist" chemicals known to block TRPA1 activity. They then exposed the cells to UVA light and measured the resulting electrical response. The cells blocked with the antagonists had 80 to 90 percent reduction in current compared to the unhindered cells.

They used a similar technique of specifically blocking TRPA1 activity to show that the ion channel contributes greatly to the presence of calcium ions after UVA exposure compared to unhindered melanocyte cells. They also found melanocytes produce little or no melanin following exposure to UVA when TRPA1 is blocked.

They did not, however, do experiments to see whether adding TRPA1 stimulating substances could increase melanin production.

In addition to Bellono and Oancea, other authors on the paper are Laura Kammel and Anita Zimmerman.

The National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health (grant T32-GM077995), and Brown University funded the research.
