Break Out the Shovels and Ice-Melt - The Massachusetts Real ...

Ice slip drinkThe first major winter storm in Massachusetts yesterday brought lots of questions on Massachusetts snow and ice removal law.

I am a homeowner and rental property owner. Am I legally required to clear snow and ice after a storm?

The law now in Massachusetts is that?all Massachusetts property owners and landlords are legally responsible for the removal of snow and ice from their property.?In 2010, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court overruled 125 years of legal precedent which protected property owners from ?natural accumulations of ice and snow,? and announced this new rule. My prior post on the case can be read here. The rule applies across the board, to homeowners, landlords, commercial business owners, restaurants, everyone.

I am a landlord. How long do I have to shovel snow and ice on my rental property?

There is no clear cut answer to this question, and juries and courts will ultimately decide what is reasonable. The City of Boston?s policy is to give businesses 3 hours to clean snow, and 6 hours to residents. My advice is to shovel and treat snow and ice early and often. Even a thin coating of black ice can cause someone to slip and fall and seriously hurt themselves. (Admit it if you?ve dumped on your rear end like I have!). If you are an out-of-town landlord, you must hire someone to shovel your snow.

My lease states that the tenant is responsible for snow shoveling. Will that protect me from liability?

Probably not. A person who is injured due to untreated snow or ice will likely sue both the property owner and the tenant. The property owner must ultimately ensure that the property is safe for visitors. The landlord may bring a claim for contribution/indemnification against the tenant.

I live in Boston, and I heard I have to shovel the public sidewalk in front of my house after a storm. Is that true?

Yes. On top of their added responsibilities, property owners in several Massachusetts communities, including Boston, Newton, Lynn, and Worcester, are required by local ordinances to clear municipal sidewalks in front of their residences or businesses. The City of Boston mandates clean sidewalks within 6 hours of a storm; Worcester is 12 hours.

Will my homeowner?s or CGL insurance policy cover any injuries from slip and fall on snow/ice?

Yes, usually. The standard Massachusetts homeowners insurance policy and commercial general liability insurance policy (CGL) will have liability coverage for slip and falls on property. Make sure you have ample liability coverage of at least $500,000 to 1 Million. (You can never have enough insurance!). As with any insurance question, it?s best to contact your personal insurance agent.

If you have additional questions, please ask them in the comment forms below!

Egypt budget deficit expected to widen to 200 billion pounds: agency

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's budget deficit in the year to end-June 2013 could widen by 50 percent from the original forecast made in July, according to a figure released by the planning minister on Monday.

"The budget deficit is expected to rise to 200 billion Egyptian pounds ($31.5 billion) in the current fiscal year unless strict economic policies are put in place to confront it," the state news agency quoted Ashraf al-Araby as saying on Monday.

The 2012/13 budget released in July had forecast a deficit of 135 billion pounds compared to an actual deficit of 166.7 billion pounds for the previous year. Economists at the time said that forecast was optimistic.

President Mohamed Mursi earlier this month suspended a series of planned tax increases as the country prepared for a referendum on a contentious new constitution, which was passed on December 22.

The unpopular measures were deemed necessary to secure $4.8 billion Egypt is seeking from the International Monetary Fund, which wants Egypt to rein in its deficit.

The government said last week it would not implement the measures for at least two more weeks to give it time to explain them to different parts of society.

Prime Minister Hisham Kandil said on Sunday he expected talks with the IMF to resume in January.

Al-Araby predicted in November that this year's deficit would be 10.4 percent of gross domestic product, without stating the figure in pounds, up from the original forecast of 8 percent.

Obama says failure to reach fiscal deal would hurt markets

By Jeff Mason

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Financial markets would be affected adversely if U.S. lawmakers fail to agree on a "fiscal cliff" deal before Tuesday, President Barack Obama said in an interview broadcast on Sunday, while urging Congress to act quickly to extend tax cuts for middle-class Americans.

Lawmakers are seeking a last-minute deal that would set aside $600 billion in tax increases and across-the-board government spending cuts that are set to start within days. If Congress does not make that happen, the first bill brought up in the new year would be to reduce taxes for middle-income families, Obama told NBC's "Meet the Press."

"Now I think that over the next 48 hours, my hope is that people recognize that, regardless of partisan differences, our top priority has to be to make sure that taxes on middle-class families do not go up. That would hurt our economy badly," Obama said in the interview taped on Saturday.

"We can get that done. Democrats and Republicans both say they don't want taxes to go up on middle-class families. That's something we all agree on. If we can get that done, that takes a big bite out of the 'fiscal cliff.' It avoids the worst outcomes," Obama added.

Low income tax rates first put in place under Republican former President George W. Bush are due to expire at the end of the day on Monday - the last day of 2012.

Obama said that failing to reach a deal would have a negative impact on financial markets.

"If people start seeing that on January 1st this problem still hasn't been solved, that we haven't seen the kind of deficit reduction that we could have had had the Republicans been willing to take the deal that I gave them ... then obviously that's going to have an adverse reaction in the markets," he said.

RARE SENATE SESSION ON SUNDAY

Obama met with congressional leaders at the White House on Friday and declared himself cautiously optimistic about the chances of an agreement, but he noted in the interview that nothing had materialized since then.

"I was modestly optimistic yesterday, but we don't yet see an agreement. And now the pressure's on Congress to produce," he said.

The Senate is scheduled to hold a rare Sunday session beginning at 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT), but it was not clear whether the chamber would have fiscal-cliff legislation to act upon.

Obama sketched out what he believed to be the most likely scenarios the end the back-and-forth between both sides. Either the congressional leaders would come up with a deal, or Democrats in the Senate would bring a bill to the floor seeking an up-or-down vote to extend tax cuts for middle income earners.

"And if all else fails, if Republicans do in fact decide to block it, so that taxes on middle class families do in fact go up on January 1st, then we'll come back with a new Congress on January 4th and the first bill that will be introduced on the floor will be to cut taxes on middle class families," he said.

Obama chided Republicans for resisting his call for tax rates to go up for the top two percent of U.S. earners despite what he viewed as significant compromises on his part to cut spending and reform expensive social programs for the poor and elderly.

"They say that their biggest priority is making sure that we deal with the deficit in a serious way, but the way they're behaving is that their only priority is making sure that tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans are protected. That seems to be their only overriding, unifying theme," Obama said.

"The offers that I've made to them have been so fair that a lot of Democrats get mad at me. I mean I offered to make some significant changes to our entitlement programs in order to reduce the deficit," he said.

PST: Injury sees Dempsey miss out again for Spurs

Last week it took us by surprised, but after getting word of his injury, concern about Clint Dempsey?s exclusion from Tottenham?s team against Stoke proved much ado about nothing. Whereas the first reaction from U.S. Men?s National Team fans was one of concern, word of ?Deuce?s? groin injury help assuage worries the USMNT linchpin was losing time with his club.

But over the Christmas holiday we heard very little about his (or anybody?s) fitness, so when the U.S. international was again excluded from Andr? Villas-Boas?s team for today?s match at Villa Park, there were renewed concerns. Only this time, the concerns were accompanied by a bit of conspiracy.

Where?s Clint Dempsey? And why don?t we know more about his status?

Today against Aston Villa, Villas-Boas has selected the same four players who started at forward and wide midfield in Spurs? 0-0 weekend draw with Stoke. Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe were up top. Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon wide.

And just under an hour into today?s match, the results have been much the same. That Tottenham has continued to struggle without Dempsey will provide some solace for Deuce?s biggest supporters, even if Defoe?s broken through near the hour.

MORE: Wayne Rooney set to miss three weeks for Manchester United

Still, all this fretting exaggerates the influence of Dempsey?s injury. While it?s true that the former Cottager may see slightly less time in a fully healthy Spurs team, he?s not going to be forgotten. Villas-Boas clearly values Dempsey?s contributions, which is why the American was not only immediately inserted into Spurs? starting XI after his arrival but also maintained his place during his early season adaptation.

And paranoia about his injury status may also go too far. Given the nature of groin injuries, if Dempsey was hurt on Saturday, it?s not unreasonable that he?d continue to have problems today. It?s only been three days.

Until we hear more, there?s no reason to think Dempsey?s fitness is a serious concern. Nor is there reason to think he?s fallen out of favor at White Hart Lane.

Snow threatens post-Christmas travel

A huge storm that dumped heavy snow and rain on the West Coast is expected to move east and could spoil travel plans for people looking to return home the day after Christmas, which is considered one of the busiest travel days.

The powerful storm that has already blanketed much of Northern California is expected to move east over the next few days and drop snow from Oklahoma starting today before finishing up in the Northeast sometime Wednesday.

The Midwest will be covered with snow by Wednesday, likely causing delays at major airports in cities including Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis and Chicago just in time for post-Christmas travel, when millions of Americans will be on the move.

Snow could arrive in the Northeast by Thursday, dropping 1-3 inches over parts of New England.

In Syracuse, N.Y., plows are working overtime, dealing with two consecutive days of snow this weekend during the city's first snowstorm of the season. As the city continues to dig out, all eyes are watching the storm roll in from the west.

Torrential rain and heavy winds have also caused trouble for California's Bay Area over the weekend, which has seen severe flooding, power outages and delays for those planning to fly out for the holidays.

Ryan Damstra of Northern California spent seven hours at San Francisco's International Airport Sunday but was not able to fly.

"After I found out my flight had been canceled after four hours of waiting in the airport, I had to wait another three hour customer service line," Damstra told ABC News Radio.

More than 400 flights were canceled on Sunday at San Francisco International Airport. Travelers had to deal with more than 200 cancelations on Saturday.

So far this month San Francisco got almost five inches of rain that is almost twice as much as they get for the entire month of December.

Severe snow and rain are not the only issues facing Americans looking to get home before the New Year. Several states in the Gulf of Mexico all the way from Houston to Raleigh, N.C., are bracing for possible tornadoes starting today and lasting until Wednesday.

The biggest chance for tornadoes will be tomorrow from Houston to New Orleans to Birmingham and Atlanta.

AAA predicts 93.3 million people will travel more than 50 miles this holiday season, from Saturday through New Year's Day. That's a 1.6 percent increase from last year. Christmas is the third-busiest holiday for travelers, after Memorial Day and Thanksgiving.

AAA is urging drivers to leave earlier or later to dodge bad weather.

ABC News' Max Golembo contributed to this report.

health and fitness: Women's Special Beauty Treatment - Breast ...

By Peter Henry

Why women go for breast augmentation? They all have a good reasoning, but that reasoning is different in every woman. While some women only want to enlarge their breasts because they consider them too small, other women simply have issues with matching shapes and sizes. Breast augmentation reasons are very different but the specialty of these breast operations never change. The doctors surgically insert saline implants in the breast. The positions for the implants may be right under the muscles of the chest wall, or behind the breast tissue. Shape and size both improve tremendously because the implants will re-locate the tissue, making it go outward and upward.

This surgery will have a lot of effects on your body (especially your bosom) and as a woman, you should know what is involved. If you assume that complications may not arise, you are wrong. Women must know everything, in case of anything goes bad, not according to the plan. Breast enhancement isn't a simple random operation. Women should have booked a consultation with the surgeon to settle details prior to the intervention. Different body shape and size options are available for the patient. It is the doctor's duty to present all of these.

The results that were requested by the patient need certain medical processes. These processes are to be presented by the doctor. After knowing about possible complications, any patient has the right to step back from surgery or to accept it together with all possible risks. Women should all study this matter deeply, even if the surgeon is going to present most of the important changes and medical procedures. Surgery will be the procedure that makes the actual changes happen and all of the medical theory is put to the test in this final practical part.

Women's breasts are biologically complicated mechanisms but surgeons know every single medical aspect perfectly. Hence, the doctor knows where to make an incision, at what size so that the implants can go be fitted. Every patient must know the size and shape of saline implants which could be inserted during the surgery. The correct and compatible saline implants can only be chosen with your doctor. Your choice will be assisted by your surgeon's professional knowledge, thus being perfect for your body and for the desired breast enlargement.

The results of any breast enlargement surgery will only show after the healing process is over. After the surgery, each patient has to know what she will be looking forward to. An increased sensitivity in the breast is common, whereby the woman with fill it around the nipples and where the incision was. Even if swelling occurs, you should not be scared. Sometimes patients will have scars. These scars disappear during the healing process. Normally, your surgeon should recommend you to come back for a medical checkup after your breast augmentation surgery. This is a routine procedure to make sure that the implants have succeeded and the patient will have natural looking, bigger and firmer breasts.

Wal-Mart Eyes Springdale Store In 2014, City - Arkansas Business

City leaders envision the?180,000-SF Wal-Mart store, set to open in fall 2014, surrounded by other retailers and restaurants. (Photo by Chris Bahn)

A 180,000-SF Wal-Mart store, set to open in fall 2014, is expected be the lead project for a new retail development in Springdale.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of Bentonville announced plans to build the Supercenter on?28 acres of farmland it purchased on the west side of the city. Officials for the retailer, who made the announcement?in a home on the land, and said the new store will create between 300-350 jobs.

In all, developers envision the Supercenter as part of a 70-acre retail project.?Springdale Mayor Doug Sprouse said that while the city has no commitments from other businesses to build in the center, he expects interest to be high.

"You?d be hard pressed to find a Wal-Mart that's just out on its own," Sprouse said. "There will be other developments around it. ? That's important for Springdale."

Sprouse said further development of the area would be good for the city, ensuring that tax dollars from retail and dining purchases would remain in Springdale rather than going to nearby communities.

Springdale voters approved a $71 million bond issue in August, half of which is scheduled to go to city road improvements. A recent project that widened Elm Springs Road, where the store will be located, helped pave the way for Wal-Mart selecting the site.

Proposed road improvements will connect Elm Springs with the Don Tyson Parkway and create easier access to businesses on the west side of Interstate 540.

Wal-Mart bought the land from the family of Max and Margie Hall.?The company did not disclose a purchase price.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? While there still remain questions about the future of The Civil Wars, there's new music on the way.

Joy Williams, one half of the Grammy Award-winning duo with John Paul White, said Thursday during a Twitter chat that she was in the studio listening to new Civil Wars songs.

It's a tantalizing clue to the future of the group, which appeared in doubt when a European tour unraveled last month due to "irreconcilable differences."

At the time, the duo said it hoped to release an album in 2013. It's not clear if Williams was referring Thursday to music for a new album or for a documentary score they have composed with T Bone Burnett. They're also set to release an "Unplugged" session on iTunes on Jan. 15.

Nate Yetton, the group's manager and Williams' husband, had no comment ? though he has supplied a few hints of his own by posting pictures of recording sessions on his Instagram account recently. The duo announced last summer it would be working with Charlie Peacock, who produced its gold-selling debut "Barton Hollow." The photos do not show Williams or White, but one includes violin player Odessa Rose.

Rose says in an Instagram post: "Playing on the new Civil Wars record... Beautiful sounds."

Even with its future in doubt, the duo continues to gather accolades. Williams and White are up for a Golden Globe on Jan. 13, and two Grammy Awards on Feb. 10, for their "The Hunger Games" soundtrack collaboration "Safe & Sound" with Taylor Swift.

Williams' comments came during an installment of an artist interview series with Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy sponsored by The Recording Academy.

Iowa lottery winners fund new football stadium

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? An Iowa couple who won a $202 million Powerball jackpot in September is donating $3 million to their son's high school for a new football stadium ? but the gift comes with a catch.

The facility visitor's locker must be painted pink.

The Bondurant-Farrar school district accepted the $3 million donation from Brian and Mary Lohse on Monday, The Des Moines Register reported (http://dmreg.co/V4NrBG ). The couple from the Des Moines suburb of Bondurant requested only that the new stadium be completed before the fall 2014 football season ? their oldest son's senior year ? and that the visiting team's locker room be painted pink.

"I was sort of half joking and half not, I suppose, but they said they'd do it," Mary Lohse said of her scheme, inspired by the University of Iowa visitor's locker room, which is also painted pink.

"It's supposed to put them in a certain soft frame of mind," Mary Lohse said. "It will certainly give all the players something to talk about."

The Lohse family has requested the stadium not be named for them. The Lohses' hope the stadium will be a community project and that local residents and groups will make other contributions.

Planning for the stadium has already begun. Local architects SVPA are handling the design. The stadium will include an academic wing and a fine arts auditorium.

"It not only gives us the opportunity to accelerate the stadium project, but to advance other plans for projects within the district as well," school board President Kristin Swift said.

The $3 million for the stadium will be released in three, $1 million increments.

Virginia governor open to discussion about arming school ...

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell did not outwardly endorse such a plan, but cautioned against immediately rejecting it.

?I know there?s been a knee jerk reaction against that,? McDonnell said to the idea when asked in an interview on WTOP, a Washington radio station. ?I think there should be a discussion of that ? if people were armed, not just the police officer but other school officials were trained and chose to have a weapon, certainly there would have been an opportunity to stop aggressors coming in to the schools.?

His comments follow an endorsement of the idea by Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, Monday night. He said teachers with the proper training and license should have ?access to weapons in their school? and licensed Texans ?should be able to carry your handgun anywhere in this state.?

McDonnell pointed to armed airline pilots as an example of non-law enforcement professionals carrying firearms on the job. Thousands of pilots have gone through training and been authorized to carry a firearm aboard their airplane.

The state?s current law bans possession of a firearm by anyone other than law enforcement within 1,000 feet of a school ? a measure McDonnell said he supported.

Before this term as governor, McDonnell served as attorney general of his state from 2006-2009, which included the 2007 killing of 33 people at Virginia Tech.

He spoke about watching news of the Friday shooting unfold on his television, and said it is time for ?another discussion about mental health and mental public safety and how those intersect,? and time to consider ?how are we going to be a more just and fair and compassionate society so people don?t act out like this.?

?My hope is that we?re not at that point where when a little first or second grader comes in to school, the first thing they see is a police officer with a gun,? he said in the interview

Arming school personnel in the most recent school shooting could have saved lives, McDonnell suggested. The gunman who forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School killed 20 students and six adults in a barrage of bullets, police said, before taking his own life.

?This perpetrator went into the principal?s office and actually killed the principal that was lunging, according to the facts that have come out so far, at the perpetrator heroically to try to stop him,? he said. ?If a person was armed and trained could they have stopped the carnage in the classroom? Perhaps. I think these are discussions that rational people should have to see what works to be able to stop school violence.?

Sally Roberts continues to oppose further treatment for her son Neon's cancer at High Court as doctor warns seven-year-old 'could die soon'

 • High Court rules Neon Roberts needs surgery on brain tumour
 • His mother tells court she does not consent to the operation
 • Doctors tell court that he would inevitably die if untreated
 • Mother previously disappeared with child after opposing the treatment

The boy snatched by his mother to save him from the ordeal of cancer treatment will have brain surgery today against her wishes.

A judge ordered yesterday that seven-year-old Neon Roberts must be operated on ?as soon as possible?.

A doctor told the court that without treatment it was highly likely the child would die ?after a relatively short period of time?.

But Sally Roberts has refused to give her consent because she does not trust British doctors and fears her son will suffer long-term side effects from treatment.

Mrs Roberts, 37, wants to seek second opinions from abroad and argued it is her ?human right? to decide what is best for Neon.

But in the High Court yesterday, Mr Justice Bodey said: ?We do not have the luxury of time. I am quite satisfied that surgery is in his best interests.?

Last night Neon was given his Christmas presents early before being taken to hospital.

He was diagnosed two months ago with a medulloblastoma tumour, which doctors believed they had removed in full during a nine-hour operation on October 25.

But Mrs Roberts refused to let her son receive radiotherapy following the first operation, and recent MRI scans picked up a growth of 1.5cm squared ? either regrowth or residual tumour.

Her estranged husband Ben, 34, wrote a statement to the judge saying he was in support of surgery and is said to be ?anxious? it is performed as soon as possible.

After yesterday?s verdict, Mrs Roberts, who triggered a national search when she went on the run with her son two weeks ago, said she understood why the judge made the ruling, but added: ?Should this be my decision as his mother? Of course it should be. It is a human rights issue.

Disagreement: Sally Roberts heard Mt Justice Bodey saying that emergency surgery should be carried out on Neon on Wednesday, despite her opposition

?I?m not keeping this case going, spending taxpayers? money, for nothing. I believe in this. Death by doctor ? people need to understand how big a problem it is. I couldn?t forgive myself if I did nothing.?

The operation carries a risk of between 10 and 25 per cent that Neon will be left mute. But despite experts unanimously reporting that his cancer has returned and warning that he may have only two or three months to live without treatment, Mrs Roberts said she believed doctors were over-emphasising how ?sick? he is.

?Everyone is talking of me depriving him of treatment, saying my son is going to die. It is simply not true but everyone believes it,? she added.

?He?s running about, wanting to play. But the surgery will take it out of him. The operation will affect his movement, balance, his speech. It can sometimes cause the cancer to spread.?

She insisted that she was not fighting simply on mother?s intuition, saying: ?This is not something I just think. This is something I know. I have researched this.?

She said her estranged husband opposed her actions because he had not done enough research on the subject. Mrs Roberts, who wants Neon to be treated with alternative medicine such as oxygen therapy, insisted ?death by doctor? was a ?bigger problem than terrorism?.

She argued that the only evidence cited in court in favour of radiotherapy was a study on a small number of infants from the 1940s, and claimed to have found studies from abroad which prove radiotherapy is often unnecessary. A doctor in court said he was not familiar with the research.

Mrs Roberts dismissed her legal team minutes before court yesterday because she did not believe they had enough faith in her case. She has since hired renowned human rights lawyer Imran Khan, best known for representing the family of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence.

The mother-of-two, who is originally from New Zealand, had asked the court to postpone a decision on surgery until she could seek second opinions from Russia, Germany, China and the United States.

She had earlier consented to the operation but changed her mind on the morning of yesterday?s hearing, and said she believes the growth spotted on recent MRI scans could be scar tissue.

Doctors treating Neon, however, claim he has already been ?disadvantaged? by the delays in his treatment. Mr Justice Bodey said he had sympathy with Mrs Roberts, but added: ?Putting all those risks in the balance?.?.?.?in the unhappy position [Neon] now finds himself, I am quite satisfied that surgery is in his best interests.?

After spending today in hospital with Neon, Mrs Roberts will tomorrow return to the High Court to try to prevent her son being given radiotherapy in January.

Home for the Holidays, or Not: Tell Us Your Stories - NYTimes.com

There is plenty of allure, challenge and excitement to living abroad, but those with a proclivity for homesickness can find themselves awash in it during the holiday season. Have you spent your holidays overseas, on assignment or by choice? Where did you go? How did you celebrate? Here is my story; tell us yours. We?ll post our favorites during these last weeks of 2012.

The day I love most ? Christmas! ? is the day I?m most dreading this year. Three years into an assignment abroad, I?ll be spending my third Christmas away from home. I?ll work on Christmas Day; there won?t be much to do. I?ll have dinner with friends who are also far from their families.

In thrall to the chance to live overseas for the first time I had somehow missed the fine print: that I?d be working throughout the holidays each year. Or perhaps three years ago, Christmas at home didn?t feel as urgent as it does now.

On Dec. 25, technology willing, I?ll Skype with my daughters. They?re grown up enough that they no longer expect the wonder world under the tree, but like me, not grown up enough not to miss the cooking, the wrapping, the Christmas music. They?ll have that this year with their father in New York. I?ll call my mother, and my siblings. I?ll miss my own father; he died in March.

My family came to visit that first Christmas in Paris. It snowed every day, as I recall, soft white flakes making this most beautiful city even more so. We saw ?My Fair Lady? at the Th??tre du Ch?telet, took a ride on the Ferris wheel at Place de la Concorde and had a bona fide b?che de No?l.

Last year Christmas was on Sunday. My marriage had finished its unraveling by then; the girls and their dad stayed in New York. I fled France for England, where old friends welcomed me into their cozy house in the country and enormous family celebration ? a lot like the celebrations of my own childhood. We went to the Anglican village church, to the children?s service. Said the prayers, sang the carols. We paid a visit to my friend?s mother?s grave in the well-kept cemetery. We listened to the Queen?s Christmas message; worried about Prince Philip, who was feeling poorly. We hung mistletoe cut from the nearby woods and set the table, with Christmas crackers (party favors that open with a snap), and everyone from the two nonagenarian grandmothers to the youngest children wore colorful foil crowns throughout the feast.

?We go all out for Christmas in England,? one of my friends? three daughters said, as if she had to explain the over-the-top-ness of the decorations and the parade of dishes, no one of which could be done without. Roast parsnips and carrots, Brussels sprouts, roast potatoes, red cabbage, bread sauce, cranberry jelly, red currant jelly, sausage stuffing, pigs in blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon, no puff pastry here), gravy and of course turkey and then for dessert ? er, pudding ? it was mince pie and Christmas pudding with a choice of brandy cream or brandy butter.

?We don?t have your Thanksgiving,? she said as she mixed up the bread sauce. ?Christmas is our only chance.?

The country goes so all out, in fact, that trains don?t run. A cab arrived to whisk me to Heathrow, but, thankfully, not till after Christmas pudding was served. The warmth, the unabashed jollity, the familiarity of the traditions and not least the comfort of my own language kept the ache for home manageable. I only wished I could have stayed for Boxing Day.

I know well that my circumstances don?t qualify as hardship. It?s Christmas in Paris, after all. Those on military duty far from home, especially those in danger: those are the people, and their families, for whom separation at the holidays must be roughest. This year has been rough for so many, close to home: the unimaginable horror of the shootings in the Connecticut elementary school, the devastation of Sandy. The promise of renewal that the Christmas story tells feels farther away, harder to locate, within and without.

Twice, when my girls were small, kittens magically appeared under the Christmas tree ? always the biggest tree we could carry home. There was delight, and surprise, and a lot of cuddling. Even if I were at home, it wouldn?t be that kind of Christmas. Christmas with older children is different; they like to loll around in family togetherness, but only to a point. Their friends are in town; they?re restless to see them. Soon they?ll be so restless that they may choose to spend Christmases away from home altogether. I did when I was their age. That?s probably as it should be. Presents are still a delight, but they prefer to have their lists strictly observed. Surprises are less welcome than they used to be.

It?s a rainy December in Paris, but I?m resolved not to mope. The clouds broke for a few hours this weekend and I carried home a fat little tree from the corner, strung the lights and hung some little ornaments. There?s an ice-skating expedition in the offing, and some nice evening gatherings. Maybe I?ll do some baking and invite my favorite neighbors over, although my oven is tiny and I don?t have an American measuring cup. I?d have to approximate ingredients and temperatures. And really: baking, in Paris? The epitome of redundancy. Maybe I?ll succeed in sending some Christmas cards instead.

I?ll go to the American Cathedral on Christmas Eve; I haven?t been there yet, and I?m told the organ is stupendous. I?ll retrace my steps to hidden Sainte-Chapelle, and marvel again at the soaring verticality of its stained glass. Or I?ll go to the American Church, where our yoga class meets on Saturdays. As the holidays approach we practice amid Christmas trees hung with humble, beautiful construction-paper ornaments. Stray flecks of glitter sparkle on our mats; the trees are fragrant ? the woods in winter. We hear the choir rehearsing their carols.

I might check the airlines one more time, to see whether, miraculously, a ticket has appeared at a reasonable price that delivers me to New York next weekend and will get me back to Paris in time for work on Christmas.

It?s only a day, I keep telling myself. When I?m home again, I?ll love it even more.

Today I have continued to work on my annotated bibliography:

Source 2

GreatSchools Staff. ?Why Learn a Second Language?? GreatSchools. GreatSchools Inc. Web. 7 December 2012. < http://www.greatschools.org/students/academic-skills/540-learn-second-language.gs?page=all >.

Main Idea:

The main idea of this source is to draw attention to the need of learning a second language in the United States. This source speaks to the common benefits of learning a second language and the changes in the education system in terms of world languages. The sub-claims in this piece is that there are several resources for learning a second language and that, ?I took French in school, but I can?t speak it? is, ?no loner an acceptable response?(Source 2). This source talks about the several benefits of learning a second language and how anyone can benefit from this type of knowledge. It presents the idea of taking advantage of the opportunities available to people to learn a second language, saying that there are even easily accessible online resources for learning a second language.

Argument Analysis:

I believe that this is a reliable source, because although it does not formally cite any outside sources or provide a bibliography on where their information came from, this source does reference a few credibly sources such as the College Board. Though this source is from an educational website, I do think that it is in some ways objective, because the article was written by the general GreatSchools Staff, not by a specific committee or group focusing on world language education. They also increase their credibility by providing quotes and some references to support their claims. I believe that the author is qualified, because it is an educational organization arguing in favor of expanding students? education for their future benefit. I think that this source is well informed, but somewhat popular. It takes a more casual tone and would be more likely to persuade parents or open-minded teachers to side with their views on the subject.

Reflection:

I think that the information provided in this source fits in well with my information, because provides a lot of information that would be persuasive to the everyday person, such as parents, teachers, or other interested parties. Although this source is general in some areas, I think that it is easy to understand and that when combined with more scholarly sources, will provide information that can be persuasive and well understood by a larger audience.
